Understanding Metal Price Units

Metal prices are quoted in different units depending on their category. Precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) are traditionally quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (oz t), while base metals (copper, aluminum, zinc, nickel, tin, lead) are quoted in US dollars per metric tonne on the London Metal Exchange (LME).

Key Conversions

  • Troy ounce (oz t) = 31.1035 grams. This is the standard unit for precious metals, different from the avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g).
  • 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kilograms = 1,000,000 grams = 32,150.747 troy ounces.
  • Price per gram = Price per ounce ÷ 31.1035 (precious metals) or Price per tonne ÷ 1,000,000 (base metals).
  • Price per kilo = Price per gram × 1,000 or Price per tonne ÷ 1,000.

Why Convert Metal Prices?

Whether you are an investor, jeweler, scrap metal recycler, or industry professional, comparing prices in a common unit is essential for making informed decisions. Our converter lets you instantly compare the gold price per gram with the copper price per kilo, making it easier to evaluate opportunities across different metals and markets.

Troy Ounce vs. Avoirdupois Ounce

A common source of confusion is the difference between a troy ounce (31.1035 g) and a regular avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). All precious metal prices on MetalMarket.cash use the troy ounce, which is the international standard for precious metals trading. When buying gold, silver, platinum, or palladium, always ensure you are comparing troy ounce prices.
